Two Roads Kellie Penna

This one felt different. Lets get that out of the way right off the bat. I don’t think I’ve hit my professional “peak” when it comes to film. But from my small experience, I can tell you this one was different.

We had difficulties right from the start. Me, sound, and the DP were in the same car heading to Louisiana. We spent a fair amount of time tetris – ing 2 cars full of equipment into 1, which left two personal bags on the roof of the car. A minute on the road (didn’t even hit the gas station yet) and one of the personal bags flew off onto the highway. The other decided to commit suicide by 18-wheeler by flying off 2 hours later. But you’ll be happy to know that both bags survived and did not cause any damage to other cars. Oh and on the way there we were getting tornado warnings every hour.

Once filming commenced it was a blur of early mornings, forgotten equipment, weather issues, last minute runs for necessities, more weather issues, animals being animals, cars getting stuck in mud, insects threatening to ruin the whole shoot, did I say weather, memory card dumps, late nights, mud, sweat, sunburns, tears, anger, and more weather.

But despite all the issues every scene was shot, and we got done what we needed to do. 5 people pulled through on 6 very long days. And I think that’s what made it feel more legitimate. Not that the other stuff I’ve worked on hasn’t been legitimate. But this is the one where I had this feeling in my gut that said “You did it, you made a film.” And I truly believe that this is the one that will cover some ground. It may be based on a feeling, but I don’t see anything wrong with that.
