What is Aryln Studios?

The mission of Arlyn Studios is to provide Austin the audio production infrastructure necessary to compete on a global level, while also providing a community hub for our local music professionals.

What is the startup story for your company?

Willie Nelson and his nephew Freddy Fletcher originally started Arlyn Studios in 1984.  Arlyn went on a nine-year hiatus from 2003-2012 while Freddy’s and Willie’s attention shifted to Arlyn’s sister studio, Pedernales.  During that time, I saw the growing need for a true commercial recording studio in downtown Austin.  After lots of nagging, strategizing, and fundraising, we closed Pedernales and consolidated all of the equipment and clientele back into the newly remodeled, 7,000 square foot Arlyn Studios space in December of 2012.

What made you decide to start your company?

My passion for music production and for supporting Austin’s rich music culture and community.

What is the best moment of having a startup?

Making money and realizing that your crazy idea might actually work!

What is your greatest challenge as an entrepreneur?

Keeping yourself motivated and honest when you don’t have anyone to answer to but yourself.

What is your tip for aspiring startups/entrepreneurs?

As cliché as it sounds, just do it!  Too many would be, could be entrepreneurs tip toe around the playing field trying to de-risk the situation and rationalize for their hesitancy as “waiting for the right time.”  That’s like trying to get good at a sport by watching from the sidelines, you can’t do it.  Meanwhile those on the field are trying things, making errors, and occasionally getting lucky, all the while learning from their mistakes and getting the hang of it.  Rather than waiting around for everything to be perfect, which it will never be, jump right in and start reacting.  I like to call it, “Dropping into the half pipe.”  Once you drop in, there’s no turning back and all you can do is try to keep from falling on your face.
