07 Jun Funemployment: The First Table Read
Dear Diary,
The first table read for Funemployment was both an interesting and pleasant experience. My biggest takeaway is that despite having differing opinions, people still tend to share similar thoughts on parts that do or do not work.
What surprised me the most is that characters who I had the least emotional attachment to seemed to read the best, while those I had an extreme emotional attachment to did not. I realize that having such an emotional attachment is keeping me from cutting what needs to be cut to make the script flow.
Luckily, I am working with two other writers who will not have problems making the cuts that I cannot. On a positive note, people laughed during the parts we wanted them to laugh. Yay!
Things to improve on:
For the next table read, I want to require that the readers have read through the script at least once so that they can try to be in character during the read. This will help me get a better feel of the dynamics between the characters. I will probably also not have any of the action lines read so that the conversational flow is not disrupted.
A good first table read though. Hopefully, we can have another one in a week. I am so ready to shoot this film, but in the end nothing can be done until the script is where it is supposed to be. This is an extremely frustrating process. I wonder whether this is how a guy feels when he really wants to hook up with a girl who is making him wait.
I hope it is worth the wait. It will probably take us a good week to chop up the script before attempting the next one. Until the next table read, my brain will be filled with questions on places to shoot, permissions to acquire, ways to raise money, and more. If you have any words of advice or know of any resources we can tap into, feel free to shoot us an email!
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the first one! Video will come soon.
