26 Jan Moth to Flame New Year Resolutions

Chasing a dream and capitalizing on it is hard. The biggest lesson I learned in 2014 is that there comes a time when the business takes over the craft. It takes extra effort on your part to let go of the business and trust the people you work with, so you can carry out your craft.

Every step of growing a business has its own set of problems. In the beginning I ran Moth to Flame pretty much on my own. As we grew in size and added more and more people, processes had to be put into place, quality control, revised contracts, revised pricing, improved websites, and the number of business nuisances grew. I was working easily 80-100 hours per week and my life quality decreased and at times my work suffered as well.

I found that less and less of my time was actually devoted to the part I loved the most, making films. A wise friend told me, these aren’t problems at all and that I had to stop thinking of them as such. Instead I must look at these issues as indicators of a company that has grown from a solo venture, to a true team effort.

These are my resolutions for 2015

Trust in my Team

In 2015, my hope is that the company will truly grow beyond me. I want to learn to trust my team members and let them do their jobs. Sometimes this means taking a back seat and deferring to their expertise and not always having to be involved in everything.

Be Selective

I want to work smarter and be more selective in the projects that I take. Then I can make room for myself and the projects I feel I need to pursue in order to grow as an artist. Not only will I be selective, Moth to Flame will be more selective as well. That way we can give each project the dedication it needs in order to deliver the best content.

Make more art for the sake of art

Personally, I would like to make more content because I love it and not simply because it will help the business. I think when I started to only focus on the economics of Moth to Flame, I stressed myself out and started to not enjoy the projects as much. I’d like to complete at least 2 short films, a web series, and plan out the next feature film idea.
