This little short had a couple of big firsts for us at Moth to Flame. First science fiction piece, and because it’s science fiction it was the first time where the production design played a big role.
I’m so proud of this film. We all worked so hard and so well together.
From the very beginning, we did some serious pre-production. This is one of the first films we were able to meet together and discuss the look of the film. We looked at examples of lighting and coloring to pinpoint the kind of look we wanted.
So I’ll be honest, this was a very last minute thing. I mean I knew what I wanted to do, Christine and I talked about it for a hot second. I knew it had to get done, but yet again here I was editing late into the night to finish it up.
SO….MUCH……..WALKING……We walked at least 2 miles everyday (I’m not exaggerating). Walking to the train station, walking from the train station to our destination, to our hotel, exploring. Walking everywhere. But hey, exercise so no big deal.
This one felt different. Lets get that out of the way right off the bat. I don’t think I’ve hit my professional “peak” when it comes to film. But from my small experience, I can tell you this one was different.
AAAAAhhhhh…….my workspace. Seeing someone’s desk in my mind is akin to seeing the inside of the trunk of a car; unique to each owner. Here are the highlights of mine. Mac desktop, calendar, notebook, lamp, and whatever I’m working on at the time. I like to keep my desk pretty clean and neat, just makes me work better. There’s the spider I created for the Valentine’s Day animation laying next to my keyboard. I want to frame him because he turned out so well but have yet to buy a tiny frame. His legs pop off pretty easily too…
Here are Kellie Penna’s Resolutions for the New Year 1 Watch more Independent movies. I’ve never had a problem with going to the movies. Do it all the time, and my husband is always game. But we always see “mainstream” movies. Nothing wrong with that, I quite enjoy it. Ah the dual nature of stop motion animation… The first side: all the planning, and prepping: It can be anything from sand, to Legos, G.I. Joes, to drawings, to the classic “Claymation”. You spend hours plotting out the story, making the background, each individual frame (if required), and then you finally shoot it. Which, if anyone is wondering, takes several more hours. The second side: you’ve accomplished all this work!!! Then you play the footage……..it lasts 8 seconds. Literally. 8 seconds le sigh That’s it. You might be able to stretch it to 10-12 seconds, 15 if you’re really good….
