30 Dec RIP Daniel Thompson, Moth to Flame intern

It is with a heavy heart for me to write this blog about the passing of a former Moth to Flame intern, Daniel Thompson. I remember when Daniel first jumped on board with Moth to Flame. My first impression of him was wow, this guy is so excited to learn about filmmaking.

My first time meeting him was at a friend’s gathering during SXSW , when he mentioned that he wanted to get experience on set. He had just moved to Austin and was figuring out what he wanted to do. I could immediately see his hunger to learn and was so blown away by his positive personality that I told him to jump on board.

Daniel always had a bright smile on set. He didn’t know much about filmmaking but he was ready to get his hands dirty in anything. One of his first times on set was during Moth to Flame’s first project with Nike. He came on to help with whatever we needed and he did it with such vigor and enthusiasm. He wanted to learn about cameras, about how to use a jib, and really just anything.

Pretty soon, as Moth to Flame tradition it seems, he started appearing not only on crew, but also in our productions as an extra! In fact in two productions he came dressed up in the shiniest gray suit I have ever seen. He played a pit boss in a sketch and was also in the background for a date scene in Funemployment.

When he decided to take a job in California in the middle of production for Funemployment, I was very sad to see him go. Little did I know this would be the last time our team would see him again.

Daniel passed away Dec 28, 2014. He will be forever remembered by Moth to Flame as the kind spirit who brightened up our sets. Daniel, I hope wherever you are, you continue to play your saxophone, make movies, and be at peace doing what you love.

We are very blessed to have known you and you will not be forgotten. RIP.
