It's surprising to think that many of the online platforms we use daily and perhaps could not fathom living without have only existed for less than a century. For me, my guilty pleasure is YouTube. This phenomenon occurred when two programmers and one design student, Steve Chen, Jawed Karim, and Chad Hurley, respectively (of course the White guy is the designer..) brought YouTube to the public in February 2005. That’s only about 7 years from today!     I suppose YouTube has significantly affected me because my career as a serious filmmaker did not officially start until 2009.  I dabbled...

The social media space is a space that I am fascinated with because of the power it gives to independent filmmakers wanting to self-promote their own material. Before social media, we relied purely on screenings and film festivals, in order to gain an audience. Now, anyone can post a YouTube video and it has the possibility of going viral, accessing millions of users locally and around the world.   Unfortunately, because it is so easy to post material on YouTube and Facebook, it is also easy for your material to become lost amongst the millions of other user content. After…

What is a production studio in a bag? It is bag that contains everything you may need in order to shoot wherever and whenever you want in an efficient and effective manner. I am not promising crane or slider shots, however, for everything else, my production studio bag works quite well. I have developed and perfected my bag for a few years and the items in this bag have been directly influenced by my experience as a filmmaker.   Someone once described my style of shooting as “ninja” shooting. And no, this was not a racial comment… but the fact…

A good filmmaker is one who knows how to establish a connection with an audience through a story. These stories are driven by the characters, “personas,” that we create. In order to create a believable or relatable character, I often have to recreate an entire character’s life cycle, habits, dreams, goals, even if these characteristics are not portrayed directly in a story, in order to understand how a character would naturally react to the events that happen in his or her life.   My latest project involved making a spec commercial that targets Texas moms who would be interested in…

Check out what happened in 2011 and Moth to Flame’s goals for the new year!! Lots of new things in 2012. Many accomplishments in 2011, but we are already looking to do bigger and better things in the new year. If I didn’t mention you, I am sorry! I did this really fast. Off the top of my head, I totally forgot to mention David J Anderson for redesigning the Moth to Flame logo and Shannon Deane who continues to help me clean up my messy sound.

How do the members of Moth to Flame relieve stress? Blow stuff up at pyro camp in Hayes, Texas, of course! Ryan Jurgensen and I share a common love besides entrepreneurship; we love guns, explosions, special effects, and just wrecking havoc. Just check out the last project we did together titled: Project 0: Part I. Make sure to also check out the making of the video, where we talk about using visual special effects. Naturally, when Ryan showed me a groupon to a day at Pryo Camp, I said “was that a rhetorical question?” Hells Ya! November 19, 2011, we…

Every semester it feels like my workload keeps increasing exponentially. The one word I need to keep continuing to learn how to use is "No." Fortunately, after being asked to help out with the 2011 Mr. McCombs pageant, I am glad that I did not say no to this opportunity. It was a big rush. Only a few hours, sometimes, just 30 minutes to film something that hopefully would be funny or compelling. Carlos Dinkins, one of my favorite actors and friends (because of his ability to deliver in a shameless matter) said yes immediately of course... then David Isquick,...
